The 2023 Preakness Stakes was the 148th Preakness Stakes, a Grade I Stakes Race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds at a distance of 1+3⁄16 miles (10 furlongs; 1,911 metres). The race is one leg of the American Triple Crown and is held annually at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The Preakness Stakes is traditionally held on the third Saturday in May, two weeks after the Kentucky Derby.
The field for the Preakness was drawn on Monday, May 15 with a field of eight. Mage, the Kentucky Derby winner and the only horse to come in the Preakness from the Derby, was named the 8-5 morning line favorite drawing Post 3. This was the first Preakness in 75 years to include only one Derby participant.
2024 Preakness. The favorite was scratched, so I will give you the #8 Tuscan Gold as my #1 choice, followed by #5 Mystik Dan and then #9 Imagination (in any order) But I love the way Gaffilione rides!
"Seize The Gray" wins the 2024 Preakness! Took a huge dump right before the race too! Incredible. Wish I would have been there. Wire to wire win! Mystik Dan was second a few lengths behind. Pouring rain, muddy racetrack. Nice set-up for a racehorse bred for the muddy conditions. Tuscan got a bad trip in that mud!
The Preakness is run at a Mile & 3/16 or 10 Furlongs. The Track Record at Pimlico is held by Secretariat 1:53.1; even though Man O' War ran it in 1:51.3. There is some question on whether the time for Man O' War was correct.
The Preakness is run on dirt. Many Grade I races are run on Turf (Grass) of the caliber as the Preakness at this distance.
We want you to be completely knowledgeable on the Preakness. Please feel free to ask questions on any part of the Preakness.
This is a tribute to Margrave (above), the 1896 Preakness Winner in record time! The photo is ancient, but this racehorse groomed the track with real speed! His sire was
St. Blaise and the dam was Lady Margaret (out of The Ill-Used).
Margrave was bred by August Belmont Jr. at his Nursery Stud near Lexington, Kentucky. He was sired by 1883 Epsom Derby winner St. Blaise who had originally been imported into the United States by August Belmont Sr. to stand at his Nursery Stud which at the time was located in Babylon, New York. After Belmont Sr.'s death in 1890, St. Blaise was sold several times and before Belmont Jr. bought him back. Margrave's dam was Lady Margaret, a Belmont family bred multiple stakes winning mare (12 times), who also was the dam of Masterman, winner of the 1902 Belmont Stakes.
Margrave finished 3rd in the Kentucky Derby from the #10 Post, after a bad start and 2nd in the Belmont Stakes, after an inquiry! He always had a slow start, but would come screaming down the stretch in every one of his races.

This is a tribute to the 1906 Preakness Winner (above), Whimsical- who ran past five racehorses to gain the lead at the start to win the Preakness in record time! She was the second filly to win the Preakness. Blessed with outstanding speed, jockey Cartier had to place a stranglehold on her at the half mile.
Orlando was Whimsical's sire and the dam was Kismet. It was Kismet's sire, Hindoo, where Whimsical gained all of her speed! Hindoo was the only thoroughbred racehorse to break a 1:09.0 barrier for 6 furlongs on the track, before 1900.

This is a tribute to the 1933 Preakness Winner (above), Head Play. After losing a photo finish to Brokers Tip in the Kentucky Derby, Head Play crushed his opponents in the Preakness!
Trainer Willie Crump, a former top jockey, bought Head Play for $500 at a yearling sale and gave him to his wife Ruth to race under her name. At age two, Head Play broke his maiden in his second start. He went on to win the one and one sixteenth mile Hawthorne Juvenile Stakes in December at Hawthorne Race Course in Cicero, Illinois, before being freshened over the winter. In his three-year-old season, with jockey Herb Fisher aboard he won the Derby Trial Stakes at one mile at Churchill Downs on opening weekend. After that impressive win, in which he beat a number of the Kentucky Derby eligibles, the Crumps accepted a $30,000 offer for the colt from Suzanne Mason, wife of construction contractor Silas B. Mason whose consortium built the Grand Coulee Dam.
Head Play's sire was My Play and his dam was Red Head (who could come from behind and/or take the lead in any race). Head Play was injured and did not win another race in the remainder of his three-year-old or four-year-old seasons. As a five-year-old, he came back into form from his injury and won four stakes races on separate coasts of the country. Early in 1935, he won both the inaugural running of the San Antonio Handicap in the first week of February at one and one eighth mile on the dirt and the San Juan Capistrano Handicap in the second half of April at the same distance at Santa Anita Park outside Los Angeles in California. Then he won the Bay Meadows Handicap at one and one eighth miles in the San Francisco Area in Northern California at Bay Meadows Racetrack. In May, he ran against the 1934 Kentucky Derby winner, Cavalcade, at Belmont and recorded an upset victory over the younger horse.
