The most adorable redhead in thoroughbred horse racing! Secretariat, also known as Big Red, was a champion American thoroughbred racehorse who won the American Triple Crown of thoroughbred racing in 1973.
Secretariat passed away at 19 years old due to laminitis in 1989. Gorgeous athlete and fabulous breeder!
Thank You BARBARA MARANZANI for the inset article.
So let's begin with Secretariat's sire (dad) 'Bold Ruler' (1954) and his dam (mom), 'Something Royal' (1952).
Bold Ruler was the 1957 Preakness Winner!
Extremely tough group of thoroughbreds in 1957 & 1973.
Two thoroughbreds that had flair, great runners and both had near-perfect body composition! What you look for if you were going to breed.
Triple Crown race wins:
Kentucky Derby (1973)
Preakness Stakes (1973)
Belmont Stakes (1973)
Stakes wins:
Sanford Stakes (1972)
Hopeful Stakes (1972)
Futurity Stakes (1972)
Laurel Futurity (1972)

Now we will discuss the Lineage of Secretariat.
We also will go over his composition during this class.
Love that 'coin toss' in the office! We'll discuss.
A foal is born at midnight!
Can you just imagine being Ron Turcotte and riding BIG RED to victory in the Belmont Stakes? Sitting atop of this magnificent racehorse, 31 lengths in front of the second-place horse! Incredible! Masterful..

Thank you to the individual who recreated this photo. Excellent portrayal of BIG RED! I really don't believe there will be another racehorse like him. Thank you, Lucien Laurin!
So, Secretariat sired to 662 thoroughbred mares directly- his success wasn't that great. But it's the offspring (well into the thousands); where BIG Red shined! At a 37% success rate (as a grandpa; great-grandpa; and great-great grandpa!) That's fantastic! More than a few millionaires and many Grade I Winners! Believe me, I've checked and the lines are just incredible. More than a few daughters down the line, have sired many, many Grade I Winners!
Secretariat's lineage takes us way back to: French-bred "Robert LeDiable" and the super sire mare of 1868 "Lady Langdom" (out of Danehill & Winning Hit!) Who sired 18 Grade I Winners in twenty-years! And those stallions: Catnip 1910; Malva 1919; Mumtaz Begum 1932; Nearco 1935; Nasrullah of 1940; his sire "Bold Ruler 1954;"and the dam "Something Royal 1952." All toll, 259 down his line; Grade I Winners- since 1868! Secretariat's daughter- "Lady's Secret" has the same lineage!
Catnip of 1910 won several Stakes races; Malva (New Zealand) mare sired seven Grade I Winners to four countries. Mumtaz Begum (Ireland) mare stood at Sheshoon Stud and sired nine Grade I Winners in Ireland. Nearco was the leading sire in 1947, 1948, 1955, 1956 in Great Britain and Ireland! Nasrullah was the leading sire in America: 1955, 1956, 1959, 1960 and also in 1962.

During this classroom session, we will go over trainers who made the difference in many thoroughbreds that have raced and are racing.
All of the webpages are important. We will go over how to measure most of these fine thoroughbreds as we get into the body and each racehorse that YOU will OWN.
