This is my exciting part of the instruction! Teaching students about the most difficult race of the Triple Crown- the Belmont Stakes! A grueling mile and a half on dirt, just three weeks after the Preakness and five weeks from the Kentucky Derby. Three tough races in thirty-five days (just over one month!) The most difficult stretch in any sport! The stress that this places on a thoroughbred is tremendous, if entered into all three of these races!
The Belmont Stakes, the most grueling race in thoroughbred racing! The Belmont Stakes is an American Grade I Stakes Race for three-year-old thoroughbreds run at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. It is run over the worldwide classic distance of 1+1⁄2 miles. And in all of the years of racing this fabulous Stakes event at this exquisite racetrack, there has been only thirteen Triple Crown Winners.
My choices for today's Belmont Stakes Race at Saratoga are: Sierra Leone or Mindframe.
I thought it was a wide-open race; but after looking at the Racing Form, just these two,
The race covers one full lap of Belmont Park, known as "The Championship Track" because nearly every major American champion in racing history has competed on the racetrack. Belmont Park, with its large, wide, sweeping turns and long homestretch, is considered one of the fairest racetracks in America. Despite the distance, the race tends to favor horses with 'tactical' speed: relatively few winners close from far behind the early leaders.
Knowing racing, as I do- the odds at the Belmont Stakes, the favorites have less than a 20% chance of winning this final leg of the Triple Crown. The Belmont Stakes has brought across many a long shot! This is a bettor's race, if any that I've seen. And I have during a five-day span- wagered on 34 races at eight different racetracks (at an OTB) and 'won' 22 of those races: WIN; PLACE; EXACTA; TRIFECTA; and the SUPERFECTA! Included were two Pick 3's and one Pick 5 (from seven racehorses chosen!!) I did collect over $8,000 on this.
We want you to be completely knowledgeable on the Belmont. Please feel free to ask questions on any part of the Belmont.
